Jim--thanks much for the reminder of the good work at PLF (especially that thoughtful sustainability paper) and to the link to that site. I regret the omission in what was merely a sampler of the many recommendations for actions on public lands policy.

Frederick--I have not seen a comprehensive map of all the designations in the Omnibus Public Lands bill. John Garder of The Wilderness Society referred me to http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/blm_special_areas/NLCS/maps/2009_Designation_maps.html for the newly designated BLM lands.

Sarah, The sustainability of the National Public Lands and their wealth of resources, both amenity and commodity, can be assured if we follow the conservation mandate set forth in the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA)for "Multiple Use" and "Sustained Yield" as correctly defined in that law. For a full exposition of this please see the Public Land Foundation's position paper on "Sustainability and Management Policy for the National System of Public Lands" on the PLF website at www.publicland.org
