Fine article. The best "spin" on why money does not destroy our health, finances and nation. Hope it is true.

Imagine all the Billions that will be made with stem cells. A recent application in Asia produced a brand new mouse species. Greed is the only limit.

Does that make sense? That most of the nation will pay for a treatment that will extend life, without any other concern? If your answer is "Yes, we must give all the best medicine to keep them alive."
Was it Gov. Love of Colorado that first said "They have the obligation to die!" (or something like that).
Was he crazy or sane? He was trounced in newspapers.

If crazy, we are doomed, there is not enough money in the USA and China to give all Americans all the drugs they want to reduce pain and maintain "life" signs.

A famous House Speaker was dying and extremely wealthy friends told the Hospital: "Keep him alive, at all costs!" But, in time, a few weeks later, sanity appeared and the old man was allowed to "die", they even kept the heart beating until they disconnected it.
Is that a vision of Heaven, or Hell?

Splendid insights into the the vital but confusing relationship between academics and corporate interests. The article is a blueprint for reform.

This is a good piece. Personally, coming from the nonprofit sector, I think there is much to learn from community engagement activities (community sciences, I think I recently called it in a NIH innovation proposal) that can be better used and understood in even core scientific investigations to see what happens when openness prevails. Your note that some good comes even when biases and prejudices are present, the same can be said when too many protections against these are implemented with good faith toward starting with a high threshold and moving "backwards" to an agreed upon openness that sort of gets the best of both worlds. Right now I think that weight is too high on the side of darkness to make a truly fair assessment that sunshine is too light to do its job well.

Appreciate the article. I antcipate referring to it in the future.

My best,
