Interesting, all this dumping on Bush. Why hasn't he gotten credit for stopping globlal warming?

It is way past time for a president and an administration that replaces pandering to the superstitious with true respect for science! Obama has already shown he will do that.
I believe we will see an end to the politicization of science for ulterior motives from our government.
A tremendous advancement!

How about the muzzle on NASA Scientists to stay away from Global Warming issues unless reviewed and approved by the White House. It was the kind of childish things the Good Book says to put away -embarrasing!

A major aspect of Bush science policy was to reverse the traditional sequence of science and policy. By introducing constraints based solely on religious grounds, the basis for making policy decisions was removed form the demonstrable to faith based dogma. Obama's pledge in his inaugural address to "restore science to its rightful place" maybe one of the most significant promises he has made.

"It wasn’t that the Democrats stirred up the scientists; rather, the scientists stirred up the Democrats and other progressive advocates. The true coming-out moment for the scientific community with respect to Bush occurred in early 2004, when the Union of Concerned Scientists organized a group of luminaries to denounce the administration’s many distortions and abuses." As a scientist and a Democrat I can say that this is certainly true. Thank you Mr. Mooney for being part of the stirring.

I'm big on the idea of scientific authority; on science's capacity to tell us how the world is. An authority that derives from disinterested inquiry grounded in a rational methodology, subject to skeptical evaluation and continuous revision as new discovery dictates. To exercise that kind of authority, and thus to be able to respond to society's needs, science needs autonomy, a measure of independence from the demands of politics and the markets. Science needs also to have an unfettered voice in telling it like it is.

During the Bush administration we have witnessed an unprecedented level of interference with the workings of an autonomous scientific enterprise, and a stifling of the voices of scientists working in government when their findings were at odds with administration interests. Because John Marburger apparently never got to converse much with the President or those scientists, it is perhaps understandable that he hasn't been able to see what seems obvious to nearly everyone with an interest in the science/government nexus.

WOW----That John Marburger has a real good imagination! We have been arguing these same points for quite some time. It is indeed refreshing to see Chris Mooney bring them to light. Here at the Global Medical Research Fund we are hoping that Barack changes these policies in a big way, and as fast as possible. Our nation and our economy depends on it!
