This blog post reminds me of the Thanksgiving dinner I once made for 60 people in Paris. Since the holiday doesn't exist in France, there's no market for the monster birds we eat State-side. The largest turkeys I could find looked like large chickens. The butchers admonished me that the meat was too dry, and insisted I buy strips of fat to wrap around the birds. It took twelve turkeys to feed my guests. (Not to mention that ears or corn were sold individually and cranberries nearly impossible to obtain.). This all goes to say - bring on the Butterballs! I'm up for whatever safely regulated breeding or other genetic improvements meet our needs in a rapidly growing world.

Ms. Ortuzar: Weiss' "praise for future products"? Did I miss something? What I read was a cautionary column pointing out the potential downsides of genetically engineered food. Please re-read and realize when somebody might actually be on your side, even if they're not making the exact points you want them to make in the exact language you want them to make them.

Mr. Weiss has not done his homework, and his praise for future products does not inspire confidence in his research, which appears to be nonexistent.

Any tax dollars spent on this "turkey" of questionable nutritious value have been wasted. These products that Weiss is so enamored of are solutions in search of problems. Why doesn't he show a picture of the grotesque and inhumane USDA invention of the three-breasted turkey? And the USDA is fabricating a hog to eat less.

The USDA and FDA have nearly destroyed the genetics of farm animals in the U.S., and they apparently will not be satisfied until we have the least nutritious fabricated products paraded as food. It is no wonder that this is the sickest generation in the history of the U.S., evidenced by the recent epidemics of a host of debilitating disorders that have emerged too recently to be genetic in an evolutionary context.

The American Public Health Association and the International Trade Group IATP have amassed credible evidence documenting the environmental and nutritional degradation caused by confined animal feeding operations, a USDA invention. These animals are so stressed and unhealthy from the unsanitary conditions they live in, they are unfit for human consumption. Yet the USDA and FDA parade these unfit and poorly treated animals as "the safest food in the world." You sir, deserve no credibility for your failure to fully educate the public about these damaging practices. Instead, you applaud them.

The purest and most nutritious turkeys and chickens are the heirloom turkeys and chickens, which are available locally. Ecological farmers have been preserving and even restoring the genetics destroyed by the USDA.

I suggest you spend more time visiting these wonderful ecological farms. Just go to pasafarming.org to find their upcoming calendar of farm field days, and see what agriculture looked like before Chemlawn co-opted the USDA and provide accurate and beneficial information about the healthiest, safest, and most nutritious foods.

You have also failed to read wonderful scientific exposes documenting the toxic products and processes that are making people sick. We just need government agencies to do their jobs and stop permitting these assaults, and you need to do a better job providing the public with this evidence so they can be more astute consumers.

You are the wrong person for this position of influence.
